It’s no secret that I kind of like taking pictures and actually even like a few of my food photographs. I’m no Daniel Krieger nor Ex-Flexitarian nor Donny Tsang, but I’m also no [insert name of any of the numbers of inexplicably popular food blogs with dark, undetailed, totally-non-helpful photos].

So recently, my boyfriend gifted me with a new Nikon D5100 to support me in my longing to learn manual functions like a big girl. I’ve messed around with it on manual at home a little and used it on automatic on a vacation to Cape Cod, but our dinner at Asiate this weekend was the first time I used it to shoot food.

And I think I failed! My point-and-shoot was no joke, but I still just shoved it right up into the food and focused on what I wanted to highlight. Now, I guess I have to lean back, telescope my lens to focus in on what I want to, and trust that my lens is good enough to still keep the picture nice and crisp?

I’m hoping I’ll get the hang of it pretty quick-like, because right now, I’m dealing with Asiate photos that look like this:

THE HORROR. Someone teach me how to use this thing!

Exciting New Ratings System

After an excellent lunch at goodburger last weekend (review forthcoming!), my boyfriend and I left talking about the rating I’d give it, and we ran into a problem. Up to this point, I’ve been using the same ratings scale for everything from super-fine dining to interesting supermarket finds, which is of course this:

When we started talking about goodburger’s rating, though, we realized that comparing a burger to a nine-course tasting menu with wine pairings is a little ridiculous. So I made up a lovely little donut hole graphic to be used in rating cheaper restaurants.

I thought it was sooooooo clever. But most of my friends agreed it looked like a turd. So I took my boyfriend’s suggestion and decided to use the fancy pink donut for the expensive restaurants and a plain glazed donut for the cheap eats:

And so the new donuts4dinner ratings system was realized. Look for it in new reviews coming soon! (And maybe some old ones, if I’m not too lazy.)

Stir It 28: Stirring Up Relief for Haiti

This Sunday, February 21st, food bloggers in several cities will be coming together to raise money for Yéle and Share Our Strength to provide help in Haiti.

Here are the details for NYC:

What:
door prizes, drinks, music, giveaways, and most importantly, a meal cooked by some of NYC’s up-and-coming chefs

Where:
NYU’s Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health
35 W. 4th Street, 10th floor
New York, NY, 10012

When:
Sunday, February 21st
4 – 7 p.m.

Cost:
a $30 donation ($20 for students)

Hooray! It’s the first (known) case of Internet theft involving one of my blogs! One of my photos is currently on the front page of the website for the magazine mental_floss to illustrate an article about brain freeze.

(It was at the top of the page yesterday and this morning but has since been moved down. Hmph.)

At first, I was like, “Photo courtesy of donuts4dinner?! It’s not courtesy of if you steal it!” But after considering it for a millisecond, I’ve decided that I’m actually pleased as punch to see my hand featured on such an interesting website.

You’re lucky I like you, mental_floss.

Before you make any judgements about me, let me make it clear that I do not in any way condone the use of the number four to replace the word for. However, when I went to buy donutsfordinner.com, I found that someone’s squatting on it and refuses to sell it for less than $1200 due to what they’re calling its “premium nature”. Which is hilarious and stupid.

Unlike normal people, who apparently don’t consider sweets a natural part of every feast, I don’t really consider the savory parts necessary. If ice cream had a little more fiber, I’d be having dessert for every meal. And so I give you donuts4dinner, my excuse to talk about the food I like and eat whatever I want with abandon.
